As Edith, the most dowdy of Downton Abbey’s Crawley sisters, actress Laura Carmichael is used to frumpy, unflattering period costumes - but now she has revealed a sexy new look that would have Lord Grantham choking on his Darjeeling.
She and her on-screen siblings have flaunted their figures in revealing designer dresses in a photoshoot for Glamour magazine.
Here, the 25-year-old shows off her enviable curves and long, toned legs in a flamboyant Gucci dress which is slashed to the hip and has voluminous red sleeves.

In the interview accompanying the photographs, Laura – who also has a role as a secretary in the current film of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy – admits that showing her more glamorous side is a relief.
‘I spend so much time in period clothing, it’s a luxury to wear sexy outfits,’ she says.

She was joined in the photos by co-stars Jessica Brown-Findlay, 22, and Michelle Dockery, 29. Jessica, who plays feisty, feminist youngest sister Sybil, wears a spotted Stella McCartney dress with transparent side panels.
Michelle, who plays eldest sister Mary, is in a floaty black dress by Marchesa.
The new series of Downton Abbey, which begins on ITV1 tonight, is set in 1916, when fashions were changing in response to the sense of liberation many women felt as a result of their work in the Great War.
The October issue of Glamour magazine is out now
‘We didn’t have to wear so many corsets,’ Michelle said.
‘Women became more practical and the stories reflect that.’
